The former president has fought for years to prevent public and judicial scrutiny of his financial records.

John Roberts, the chief justice of the Supreme Court, has given the House Ways and Means Committee until next Thursday to reply to Donald Trump's request for a temporary restraining order against the release of the committee's tax returns.

Since he was first elected, Mr. Trump has sought to keep the committee from seeing his returns, which he has long maintained he cannot release because he is ostensibly being audited. The changes occur as two distinct cases in New York concerning him, his finances, and his enterprises are being started.

The Supreme Court also ruled that it would not prevent Senator Lindsey Graham from testifying before the Fulton County, Georgia, grand jury looking into attempts to overturn the 2020 elections

In the meantime, Mike Pence has detailed a crucial 2020 meeting that involved Mr. Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and extremist lawyer Sidney Powell in an excerpt from his upcoming political memoir. According to Pence, this meeting represented a "new low" in the escalating campaign to undermine Joe Biden's victory at the time.

Regarding the incident, Mr. Pence writes, "Even in an office intimately versed with rough-and-tumble debates, it was a new low," adding that things "went downhill from there."
