On a call on Wednesday morning, a Pennsylvania Democratic operative found that his out-of-state clients were unwilling to discuss their own campaigns. They inquired regarding John Fetterman.
According to a number of operatives and elected Democrats, many of whom didn't want to go on record criticising their home-state candidate, insiders and elected Democrats in Pennsylvania's Democratic circles worried about Fetterman's halting performance in Tuesday's high-stakes U.S. Senate debate, questioned his campaign's decision to participate, and in some cases hoped the debate came too late for serious damage to sink in.
According to David Dix, a political strategist from Philadelphia who has
worked on both Democratic and Republican campaigns, "I was getting text
messages throughout the debate and definitely when it concluded from
Fetterman backers... saying, "Woah."
Due to Fetterman's preference for large rallies where he gave stump
speeches, Tuesday night was for many voters their first opportunity to
engage in a lengthy, rapid-fire back-and-forth with him.
