For criticising Trump, who is still the de facto leader of the GOP, Cheney's
colleagues censured her and removed her from her leadership position. She is
one of the two Republican members of the House Select Committee looking into
the uprising and serves as its vice chair.
Republican State Sen. Tom Barrett poses a serious challenge to Slotkin, a
two-term congresswoman, in Michigan's newly created 7th Congressional
District. According to Cook Political Report, the election is close.
According to a source close to Cheney, Barrett is "an election denial" who
won't admit that Trump lost the 2020 election to Vice President Joe Biden.
According to Michigan Advance, Barrett joined ten other state senators in
signing a 2021 letter demanding Congress to look into baseless allegations
of voter fraud.
Many of Trump's fans stormed the Capitol in response to his baseless
allegations of a "rigged" election. According to polls, a sizable portion of
Republicans still disagree with Biden's electoral victory, and the majority
of GOP candidates for the midterm elections are said to be unhappy with the
outcome.
Cheney stated, "I'm happy to support Elissa Slotkin," in a statement
distributed by the Democrat's campaign. As we worked together on the Armed
Services Committee, I got to know Elissa as a decent and honourable public
servant who put up a lot of effort on behalf of the constituents she
represented, wanted the best for the nation, and was in it for the right
reasons.
We need members of Congress who are serious, responsible, and substantial,
like Elissa, Cheney added, "even though Elissa and I disagree on some policy
issues at a time when our country is confronting threats both at home and
abroad." Republicans, Democrats, and Independents in the 7th district are
all urged to support her in this election.
Cheney has provided criticism "at a time when it was needed," according to a
statement from Slotkin.
