Five Superhero Movies To Watch If You've Never Seen A Superhero Movie

Anyone who is a movie buff, either by their own estimation or that of others, will acknowledge that superhero movies have been king for the last two decades. This run of success came after many serious failures in trying to adapt comic book properties to the big screen. Somehow it all came together in about the year 2000, and since then, movie franchises based on comic book heroes have reigned supreme.

There are, however, a few stragglers out there who have chosen to not watch any superhero movies at all. It may not sound all that impressive, but take a look around at your closest movies theaters. A quick look at their showtimes and available screenings tend to be nothing but “super” movies, so to have not checked one out stands out.

Let’s say that you’ve decided to enter the fray and check out at least one cool superhero movie with the rest of us. Before you jump right in, you might want to dip your toes in a bit first and get a feel for what these types of movies are all about.

Here is a list of five superhero movies perfect for the individual who has never seen a superhero movie:

Superman: The Movie — “You’ll believe that a man can fly.” It’s a tagline for the ages and truly the only way to describe this forefather of the modern superhero movie. It’s been four decades since its release, but it goes a long way in showcasing the need for a great story before any special effects.

X-Men — Perhaps the movie that kickstarted the last twenty years of movies based on comic properties. Rewatching the trailer to this movie makes you realize just how long ago it came out & how different it was compared to today's films. You also realize just how long certain actors have played a particular character (we see you, young Wolverine).

Blade — It’s certainly the odd duck in the list, but this is a super-cool vampire killer that has seen one heck of a history in print. Ditto for the film adaptation from the late 90s that started a franchise. This is a deep cut for sure, but it’s definitely worth a watch.

Iron Man — Much like X-Men, you realize how long a character has been associated with a certain actor. You’re almost immediately struck by the swag & braggadocio of Tony Stark, yet it’s compelling.

Watchmen — Back in the mid-80s, the graphic novel of the same name by writer Alan Moore changed the face of comics forever. In fact, this is considered the most important graphic novel of all-time. The film adaptation had the deck stacked against it from the start, and it stands as an under-appreciated gem. Word of advice: watch it on the biggest screen you can find.

Truth be told, superhero movies have done one thing and that’s try to create a balance between the gritty underbelly of evil in the world with a sense of humor & lightheartedness. At times, the funny becomes necessary as catharsis from a world that’s just too dark, and it’s in these moments that you really start to see why these films have been as successful as they have for so many years. You may only be headlong into your first “super” movie, but there’s a good chance you’re gonna be hooked.
