In an effort to influence voters who are concerned about inflation, former President Barack Obama warned on Saturday in two crucial Midwestern states that Republicans trying to take control of Congress have no plans to curb prices and may target social safety net programmes.
Obama highlighted the economic challenges Americans confront while campaigning with Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in Detroit and Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and Democratic Senate candidate Mandela Barnes in Milwaukee. But he claimed that giving the GOP control of Capitol Hill would not significantly help to address those issues.
He remarked in Wisconsin, "In your core, you should have a sense: Who cares about you?"
Obama attacked Republican Sen. Ron Johnson, Barnes' opponent, in a statement that quickly went viral on social media.
Obama attacked Republican Sen. Ron Johnson, who is running for a third term and is Barnes' opponent. He noted Johnson's prior remarks likening Social Security administration to a "Ponzi scheme" and chastised Johnson for supporting the 2017 GOP-led tax reform.
"A few of you in this room receive Social Security. Many of your parents receive Social Security benefits. Your grandparents may receive Social Security benefits. Do you know why Social Security exists? said Obama. "Since they worked hard for it. For it, they put forth a lot of effort. Their hands are chapped as a result. For the Social Security, they worked long hours and suffered from aching backs and weak knees.
