This week, Thiem is performing in his native country.

At the Erste Bank Open in Vienna this week, Thiem is competing in front of his local supporters.

On Tuesday, Thiem defeated Tommy Paul 2-6 7-6 (2) 7-6 after saving two match points in a nail-biting first-round battle (6). The match got off to a very poor start for Thiem as Paul opened a 4-0 lead with back-to-back breaks.

Paul successfully maintained his serve the rest of the match while leading by a double break to win the first set. Both sides had break point opportunities in the second set, but no player was able to capitalise on them. In the second set, Thiem saved three break points, but he also failed to convert one.

Thiem scored five straight games in the tie-break to take a 6-1 lead before converting his second set point to force a tiebreaker. After the opening seven games of the third set's finale, Paul broke Thiem in the second game and led 5-2.

Despite being down a break, Thiem persisted and managed to force a third tie-break. Before converting his first match point to secure a significant comeback victory, Thiem there saved two straight match points.
