A bridge collapsed in India on Sunday, leaving many people hurt and more than 60 people dead.
The bridge was built in the 19th century and is situated in Gujarat, a state in western India. According to Reuters, it was closed for months prior to reopening last week for refurbishment. The bridge spans a body of water for more than 750 feet.
According to local officials, pumps were brought in to decrease the water level under the bridge so that bodies could be recovered more easily.
Although the reason for the suspension bridge's collapse is yet unknown, local media has made the assumption that it may have been due to overload.
Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, has "requested that the situation be closely and continually
watched and give all possible support to people impacted," according to a statement sent by his office.
Additionally, Modi has mandated that the relatives of the deceased receive about $2,500, while the families of the injured receive about $600.
