Paul Pelosi's attack terrified me. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's 82-year-old husband was struck with a hammer by a man who broke into his home in the middle of the night. Paul Pelosi was hurt, among other things, by a fractured skull. Where is Nancy? the intruder yelled.
It seems that Donald Trump Jr. finds it amusing.
With the caption "Got my Paul Pelosi Halloween costume ready," Trump Jr. posted a photo of a hammer and a pair of panties late Sunday night on social media. "The Internet remains undefeated," wrote Donald Trump Jr. (Side note: I won't include a link to Trump Jr.'s piece. If you'd want, you can look it up online.)
Which is egregiously poor even by the low standards set by the elder son of former President Donald Trump. Sadly, it was not surprising.
Trump Jr. has taken great pleasure in the concept that he is the king of the deplorables—someone who is willing to say and do things that other people want to but are too afraid to—more so than his famous father. Trump Jr.'s approach has always been to claim that he is kidding and that everyone should stop taking themselves so seriously. This is also likely to be the case in this episode. While the rest of us are the squares who are constantly on outrage alert, he is the cool guy who never gets offended.
But pause and think about what Trump Jr. is making fun of here. In his own house, an elderly man was brutally abused. He needed surgery since his wounds were so severe. He was attacked by an intruder who appeared to be after the House speaker as well. The person accused of assaulting Pelosi had also posted a number of conspiracy theories on social media, including ones regarding the 2020 election and Covid-19.
Condemning the crime and looking into what can be done to put better protections in place to try to prevent this from happening again are the only appropriate responses in this case.
Trump Jr., though, chose to make light of it.
Again, it shouldn't be all that shocking that he did so. If you can believe it, Trump Jr.'s social media presence is a supercharged version of his father's. What makes this so terrible is that as of this writing, Trump Jr.'s post on Truth Social had received more than 5,000 likes and more than 1,000 shares. Additionally, he tweeted and posted the article on Instagram.
This indicates that, in addition to not offering an apology for his repulsive post, he is likely to take pleasure in it, confident that his goal of alarming the woke mob has been achieved.
